InterMediaUK host “Speak Up” event to celebrate International Women’s Day
Thanks to everyone who came to our panel event on 14th March 2018. “Speak Up!” was a discussion about feminism in the media through an LGBT+ lens. Our host for the evening, Jane Hill (@JaneHillNews) was joined by Dora Michail (@DoraMichail), Sophia Ahmad and Nichi Hodgson (@NichiHodgson).
On Wednesday 14 March, Emerge welcomed InterMedia UK to the Viacom office for an event celebrating International Women’s Day called Speak Up! Over 70 people attended from across the media industry for networking drinks and a panel discussion about feminism in media through an LGBT lens. The panel, hosted by BBC Newsreader Jane Hill, consisted of Dora Michail, Managing Director for Digital at The Telegraph, Nichi Hodgson, author, broadcaster, and journalist, and Sophia Ahmad, Director of Sky Mobile. Each panellist began by telling their own story of how they got to where they are and why they felt so motivated to Speak Up.
The conversation covered a myriad of topics such as discrimination, challenging the status quo, and representation, which sparked a robust conversation on the difficulties of covering stories from intersecting underrepresented communities such as BAME LGBT being told.
After the discussion on stage wrapped up, the panel continued the conversation with members directly during the networking drinks.
